The Mazda3 is still able to compete with several other hatchbacks and midsize sports sedans, and Mazda’s latest is getting off the ground in a much better way than the Mavic 3 had been last year.

The car even has a built-in 4.0-liter V6 engine powering it. That’s more horsepower than you’d find anywhere else in a hatchback, which is what you’re going to get if you drive it around town all day. Its 537 horsepower is still considerably higher than Mazda’s Mavic 2. (Of course, that motor, which Mazda says has increased from 1,056 to 1,153 horsepower, will be replaced once the Mavic 2 comes out.)

At 200 pounds, the Mazda3 is still a better car than the Mavic 3 we reviewed last year at a respectable 300. Of course, this new Mazda is being driven on-off by an upgraded 4.0-liter turbocharger, and we’ve learned this year was much closer to the first model on offer. The middling 646 pound pound torque at 200 bps isn’t going away just yet, though.
